Seit nunmehr zehn Jahren arbeiten und entwickeln die Saxophonistin Theresia Philipp und der Schlagzeuger Thomas Sauerborn an ihrem gemeinsamen Verständnis von Klang, Interaktion und Form in der Musik. Beide leben seither in Köln und haben sich jeweils einen prominenten Namen in der deutschen Jazzszene erarbeitet. 2015 nahmen sie gemeinsam mit Bassist David Helm das Debütalbum „herb“ des seit 2013 bestehenden Trios POLLON auf, welches daraufhin u.a. zu Konzerten beim AchtBrücken Festival, dem Forum der Deutschen Jazzunion, dem Winterjazz Festival Köln oder dem WDR3 Jazzfest eingeladen wurde.

Im April 2018 fand im LOFT das von Posaunist Janning Trumann ins Leben gerufene TRIΔS Festival statt. „Ich konnte drei Abende als Kurator und Musiker gestalten. Da für mich schon seit einigen Jahren die Musik von Jozef Dumoulin tiefgreifend inspirierend ist, war klar, dass ich ihn einlade und ein Trio gemeinsam mit Theresia Philipp zusammenstelle.“ Thomas Sauerborn

Das Konzert ist der Bogen aus fünf Kompositionen von Theresia Philipp und Thomas Sauerborn. Jozef Dumoulin bringt mit seinem effektreichen Sound am Fender Rhodes eine höchst eigenständige und außergewöhnliche Klangwelt mit. Gemeinsam wurden die Kompositionen in einer Probe besprochen, angespielt und erarbeitet. Am Abend im Konzert zeigte sich, dass die Besetzung aufgeht. Es entsteht ein intimes Geflecht, welches immer wieder in energiegeladene Passagen münden und große Bögen spannt. Dabei wird es nie beliebig. Die Kompositionen dienen als Spielbrett und Anker und werden von einem gemeinsamem Bandsound getragen. Dabei sticht vor allem der persönliche Vibe hervor, welcher eine Mischung aus Science Fiction, 80er Jahre Space-Pop und Avantgarde Jazz inkarniert.

Losing Colors ist am 19. Februar 2021 auf KLAENG records erschienen.

Why does a musical bond often last for years or even decades? Is it the desire for empathy and freedom that arises when musicians listen to and trust each other in their interplay? The simultaneous urge to develop, research and hone a common language?

For ten years now, saxophonist Theresia Philipp and percussionist Thomas Sauerborn have been working and developing their common understanding of sound, interaction and form in music. Both have since lived in Cologne and have each made a prominent name for themselves in the German jazz scene. In 2015, together with bassist David Helm, they recorded the debut album „herb“ of the trio POLLON, which has been in existence since 2013 and was subsequently invited to perform at the AchtBrücken Festival, the Forum of the German Jazz Union, the Winterjazz Festival Cologne or the WDR3 Jazzfest, among others.

In April 2018, the TRIΔS Festival, created by trombonist Janning Trumann, took place at LOFT. „I was able to create three evenings as curator and musician. Since the music of Jozef Dumoulin has been profoundly inspiring for me for several years, it was clear that I would invite him and put together a trio together with Theresia Philipp.“ Thomas Sauerborn

The concert is the arc of five compositions by Theresia Philipp and Thomas Sauerborn. Jozef Dumoulin, with his effect-rich sound on the Fender Rhodes, brings a highly unique and extraordinary sound world. The compositions were discussed, played and worked out together in a rehearsal. In the evening concert it became clear that the instrumentation works. An intimate mesh is created, which again and again leads into energetic passages and spans large arcs. At the same time it never becomes arbitrary. The compositions serve as a game board and anchor and are carried by a common band sound. Especially the personal vibe stands out, which incarnates a mixture of science fiction, 80s space pop and avant-garde jazz.
